Sonic Utopia Review by Patches

The Beginnings

     This Sonic fan game I found today is simply amazing to put it simply. First the title isn't too great, but it has it's own engine so no roms or emulators to download for this one, and to make it more comfortable, you can play it with a keyboard or Xbox 360 controller. I have not tested any other controllers sadly.

The Opening

     First you'll notice the beautiful 3D graphics of this Sonic fan game and the somewhat liner pathway presented before you. It has a very basic Sonic feel and gives you the spin dash and super peel out as moves to go faster. The homing attack is also available to beat those badniks left and right. Sonic does feel a bit floaty in this game and by that I mean he feels like he's on ice a bit. I found it harder to aim my homing attack in another direction if I was already facing a different direction, and he doesn't always come to a dead stop. You have to slow him down a bit first. This game is only early pre-alpha and it kind of shows with the one stage you can play, however, there are also a few secret goodies you can find if you stray off the path a bit. good luck finding them!

Going Open World

     Then you'll notice after leaving the starting area you have a whole world to explore. It's like they took Sonic from the originals and put it on the right path, because we know how today's games hold up. *cough* Sonic '06 *cough* the game we shall not mention. Among other ones that weren't that great.. looking at you Shadow the Hedgehog. Also, notice in this picture all the land around? You can explore all of it in this early demo.

Conclusion

     In the end it's a great game that I might play a few times to see if I can find all the secrets of this place. After putting on a timer, I finished rushing through this stage at about 3 minutes 45 seconds, which isn't bad for speeding through the level. There's lots to explore and lots to do in this early demo of a game. I personally can't wait for the final release. It finally looks like they are putting sonic back on the right path for a fan game.
